Bayesian inference for categorical data analysis

چکیده
This article surveysBayesianmethods for categorical data analysis, with primary emphasis on contingency table analysis. Early innovations were proposed by Good (1953, 1956, 1965) for smoothing proportions in contingency tables and by Lindley (1964) for inference about odds ratios. These approaches primarily used conjugate beta and Dirichlet priors. Altham (1969, 1971) presented Bayesian analogs of small-sample frequentist tests for 2×2 tables using such priors. An alternative approach using normal priors for logits received considerable attention in the 1970s by Leonard and others (e.g., Leonard 1972). Adopted usually in a hierarchical form, the logit-normal approach allows greater flexibility and scope for generalization. The 1970s also saw considerable interest in loglinear modeling. The advent of modern computational methods since the mid-1980s has led to a growing literature on fully Bayesian analyses with models for categorical data, with main emphasis on generalized linear models such as logistic regression for binary and multi-category response variables.

Bayesian inference for two-phase studies with categorical covariates.
In this article, we consider two-phase sampling in the situation in which all covariates are categorical. Two-phase designs are appealing from an efficiency perspective since they allow sampling to be concentrated in informative cells. A number of likelihood-based methods have been developed for the analysis of two-phase data, but we describe a Bayesian approach which has previously been unavai...
متن کاملBayesian Inference for Categorical Data with Misclassification Errors
In epidemiological studies, observed data are often collected subject to misclassification errors. In this paper, we discuss the Bayesian estimation for contingency table with misclassification errors. Employing the exact Bayesian computations to obtain posterior means as estimates, we are faced with computational difficulties. In order to find the posterior distribution, we apply the data augm...
متن کاملBayesian Inference for Poisson and Multinomial Log-linear Models
Categorical data frequently arise in applications in the social sciences. In such applications, the class of log-linear models, based on either a Poisson or (product) multinomial response distribution, is a flexible model class for inference and prediction. In this paper we consider the Bayesian analysis of both Poisson and multinomial log-linear models. It is often convenient to model multinomi...
متن کاملUsing Bayesian networks with rule extraction to infer the risk of weed infestation in a corn-crop
This paper describes the modeling of a weed infestation risk inference system that implements a collaborative inference scheme based on rules extracted from two Bayesian network classifiers. The first Bayesian classifier infers a categorical variable value for the weed–crop competitiveness using as input categorical variables for the total density of weeds and corresponding proportions of narro...
متن کاملThe Analysis of Ordered Categorical Data: An Overview and a Survey of Recent Developments
This article reviews methodologies used for analyzing ordered categorical (ordinal) response variables. We begin by surveying models for data with a single ordinal response variable. We also survey recently proposed strategies for modeling ordinal response variables when the data have some type of clustering or when repeated measurement occurs at various occasions for each subject, such as in l...
